Application:
Phthalates (esters of phthalic acid) are a group of chemicals with a wide variety of industrial applications. Regarding cosmetics, they are used as plasticizers in products such as nail polishes and hair sprays, and as solvents and perfume fixatives in many other products.
Using Procedure:
Phthalic acid is very soluble in boiling water, 18 g/100 mL, and is much less soluble in chilled (14°C) water, 0.54 g/100 mL. Thus, water is a very good recrystallization solvent for phthalic acid.
Note:
Phthalic acid is an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, with formula C6H4(CO2H)2. It is an isomer of isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid.

Using Procedure:
Potassium phthalimide is a -NH2-synthon which allows the preparation of primary amines by reaction with alkyl halides. After alkylation, the phthalimid is not nucleophile and does not react anymore. Product is cleaved by reaction with base or hydrazine, which leads to a stable cyclic product.
Note:
The Gabriel method generally doesn't work with secondary alkyl halides. Another disadvantage of this synthesis is that using acidic/basic hydrolysis gives a low yield whereas the usage of hydrazine can make the conditions of the synthesis relatively harsh.
